Disability Rights Advocates invites CCB members to attend a hearing in our lawsuit against Uber, a popular new taxi service. DRA is representing the National Federation of the Blind of California and several individuals in this lawsuit, which challenges refusals by drivers of UberX vehicles to transport blind customers with guide dogs. At 1 pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, we will appear before the court to argue against Uber’s motion to dismiss the case.
Uber boldly contends that disputes must be resolved through arbitration out of court on an individual basis and that Uber is not subject to the ADA. However, Uber, as a transportation service, must comply with the ADA, and this lawsuit is an appropriate method to address Uber’s discriminatory practices. We will make this argument at the hearing with the support of the U.S. Department of Justice, which recently filed a statement that supports our position.
We invite CCB members, especially CCB members with guide dogs, to attend the hearing. Your presence is important because Uber needs to understand the solidarity of the community around this issue. Please note that many dogs may be in close proximity. Preferred courtroom dress is business casual. Service animals should be recently groomed. After the hearing, we will likely gather for a social event in the Civic Center area.
